This past January, senior Ayne Park won the Golden Classical Music Awards International Competition in the flute section.
The international competition has many different categories such as woodwind instruments, strings instruments and vocals.
The winners from each category get invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York on July 11.
“I used to play the violin before I heard the flute live,” said Park. “I thought it was so beautiful, so I decided I want to play it.”
Nine years ago, after being captivated by the sound of the flute at the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, she began playing the instrument.
Park studies both with the Greenhill Band and with her private instructor Monica Song, and instructor assistant Won Lee.
“Ayne is a talented flutist with a mature sound,” Upper School band teacher Brian Donnell said. “She is by far one of the most talented and driven musicians to come through Greenhill.”
At the competition, Park played Mozart’s Flute Concerto One.
“I decided to play this because it requires precision and breath control, and challenged me technically,” Park said.
For the winners’ concert at Carnegie Hall, Park will be playing Paganini Caprice No. 5.
Since the piece was designed for a solo flute, she will have no piano accompaniment.
“Right now, I’m working through the piece very slowly to make it as clean as possible,” Park said.
Though Park has had success on the international level, she also enjoys competing and performing locally.
“[Sing] always encourages me to compete in a lot of local, national and international competitions”, Park said. “I also really love performing with The Greater Dallas Orchestra.”
Though it is Park’s senior year, she plans to continue music in college and has hopes to be part of her college’s Orchestra.
This July will be Park’s second time performing at Carnegie Hall. In 2018, she won the Concert Artists International Competition, allowing her to perform there then as well.
“I’m really excited to go back to perform there because I’ve matured a lot as a musician,” Park said.
