Mike Jacobson, also known as Magic Mike, performed for Upper School students and faculty during an assembly on Dec. 7 as part of an ongoing series of performances facilitated by the Greenhill Cultural Arts Committee.
Jacobson is an award-winning magician and mentalist, and he performed tricks like close-up magic and sleight of hand while also adding comedy to the routine. He is also known for his interactive performance due to him calling audience members onto stage.
He started gaining popularity at the age of 13 and has become the first magician named as one of Forbes’s “30 Under 30” and the youngest magician to ever be admitted to Magic Castle, a clubhouse for magicians and magic enthusiasts.
In Rose Hall, his tricks consisted of pulling money out of an orange, guessing a randomly selected celebrity and cutting what seemed to be a never-ending rope.
Students say the involvement of the audience also added a layer of excitement for themselves, as many wanted a chance to participate in the tricks.
“[Jacobson] was entertaining, and it was impressive that he was able to do shows across the entire school,” said senior Quinn Graves. “I think we should do more performances like this in the future.”
This school year, Greenhill has also brought dancers and guest speakers, including Byron Sanders ’01, to present during assemblies.
“It was a fun thing to see and participate in, especially for the time of year with end-of-semester projects,” said senior Dhilan Patel. “Every so often, having something different is a nice change of pace.”
