For the 2023 season, the boys varsity baseball team, led by Head Varsity Baseball Coach Troy Haugen, had a record of ten wins, eight losses and one draw, with a 6-1 record leading up to the Southwest Preparatory Conference tournament.
After last season, 13 seniors graduated from the team. This year, the team has a smaller roster, with only one senior on the 16-player team, not allowing for a junior varsity team.
During preseason, the team has been going out to the field to throw and hit, and they have been in the High Performance Center completing strength-based workouts.
“I’ve been hitting the weight room six times a week, and I have been doing plyometrics every day,” junior Cooper Rabin said. “I also hit the batting cage every day before school, and work on my catching and throwing as well.”
Although the team is small, they said they are excited for the season to start, and especially for counter season, the games leading up to SPC, to begin.
“I’m definitely really excited for the counter games,” Rabin said. “Those games always have an added layer of intensity, and it’s fun to play against teams in our conference.”
The team says they are especially looking forward to their matchup against St. Marks School of Texas in the counter season.
“St. Marks is our school rival, and it always gets really competitive against them,” sophomore Connor Lee said.
Greenhill defeated St. Marks twice last season, with scores of 6-5 and 9-6.
Players say they will have a very strong team, aside from pitching.
“Our one, two and three pitchers were all graduating seniors [last year], however, we have a few freshmen who will help us out with pitching,” Rabin said.
With pitching being their weak spot, the team says they will be able to use their hitting lineup to their benefit.
“Everyone has been working on their craft in terms of hitting, and it makes me think we are going to have a special year,” Rabin said.
