The Greenhill cross-country teams are preparing for the Southwest Preparatory Conference race on Nov. 4 at Performance Ranch.
Jason Yaffe, Head Cross-Country Coach, says his goal is to create a family-like culture among the forty-five athletes.
“We believe everybody has a gift that we want to pull out of them,” Yaffe said. “We want them all to recognize that.”
The team is working on their consistency between practice time and race time. Yaffe encourages athletes to put in the work outside of practice – he wants athletes to focus not on time, but on challenging themselves to finish out the season strong.
“The team is focusing a lot on keeping our speed and not losing all the progress we’ve made this year while also giving our bodies time to rest,” sophomore Isabel Bhatia said.
The last meet before SPC was on Oct. 19 – both the girls and boys cross-country teams competed in the North Zone meet where schools from all over Fort Worth and Dallas compete against each other. Both the boys and girls teams finished runner-up, with St. Marks and Hockaday taking the first-place spots.
Girls cross-country placed second out of six schools, and the boys placed second out of seven schools competing.
Junior Chris Williams secured the top spot, while senior Andrew Mann claimed sixth overall.
For the girls, freshman Lilly Williams and Bhatia secured the ninth and tenth overall spots, respectively.
“We have all stuck together during the race, and we pushed each other to finish,” said senior Elizabeth Mann.
In past years, Greenhill cross-country has been in the middle of the pack for placing overall at SPC.
“We are hoping to move up a couple of spots this year,” said Yaffe.
