Greenhill held its annual Primer Pie Contest on Oct. 21, featuring a record-breaking 62 pies, the most in the event’s history. The contest took place from 10 to 11 a.m. and brought in approximately 150 attendees. Families, faculty, staff and former primer students attended the event to taste and vote on a variety of sweet and savory pies.
This year’s theme was “Polka Dot Primer Pie,” with students wearing personalized chef hats decorated with their names and polka dots. Guests were greeted by primer students handing out hand sanitizer before entering the room, where they received plates, napkins and forks. Most of the pies were sweet, while a separate table was designated for savory entries.
Each pie was labeled with a number that guests used to identify their favorites when voting. The labels also included completed math problems that Primer Students worked on as part of their classroom assignments. After tasting the pies, guests received ballots from students at a voting station. Students then handed out “I Voted” stickers to those who submitted their ballots.
According to Primer Team Leader Janice LaMendola, this year’s contest marked the 23rd year of the tradition, excluding the years canceled due to COVID-19. Following the event, primer students were scheduled to tally the ballots as part of their math lesson, with the winning pie expected to be announced by the end of the day. The contest incorporated classroom lessons into the event, with students taking responsibility for greeting guests, distributing supplies and managing the voting process.
