The varsity boys and girls soccer teams are gearing up to kick-off the season strong.
This year, the boys team has a new Head Coach, Paul Field. Field has mainly worked in the Lower and Middle school athletic programs, but this year is his first-year coaching at the Upper School varsity level.
“The goal is always to play as well as we can,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of good young players on the team this year.”
Field says he wants his players to do their best in championships, but he also wants to give younger players the experience of playing at a higher level. He also says he wants the program to be strong in the long run, not just this year.
The team’s first game of the season was a scrimmage against St. Marks School of Texas on Nov. 8 that ended in a score of 1-0. This scrimmage is a tradition that happens each year, and it gives coaches a chance to assess players in a game situation.
“I think we played very well considering it was the first time our starting line-up played together,” junior Alex Sharma said.
The girls team, despite having ten seniors this year and only losing one last year, may end up not having a junior varsity team this year.
Head Coach Laura Flanagan says the team has the determination, focus and the mindset to have a great season.
“We have a very experienced roster, and we have our sights set on winning SPC,” Flanagan said. “I think we have the talent to do it.”
The team had a quick turnaround after just putting teams together and getting out on the field. Despite not playing the team for a while, the girls beat Nolan Catholic 6-0 on Nov. 9.
“I think we’re going to have a lot of improvement over the season,” sophomore Isabel Tanner said. “We already had a great showing this past week.”
