The varsity girls golf team has been preparing for their upcoming spring season with optional early morning practices as well as sessions in the golf simulator at Greenhill.
The team is heading into the 2024 season with many young players who have prior experience in the sport from their participation on the Middle School team.
Since the beginning of October 2023, practices have been held every Tuesday allowing the team time to prepare for the season, with a few of the members even participating in outside-of-school competitions.
With a limited number of spots available on the roster, there will be cuts due to the number of girls who want to join the team.
Although the team includes several freshmen, Varsity Girls Golf Coach Thom Flinders says he is excited for the year and what the future holds.
“I think [out of] all our four golfers that are going to score, three of them will probably be freshmen, so we are really young,” Flinders said. “That means we will be very competitive over the next three years.”
However, due to the age shift, junior captain Amanda Park and senior captain Anisa Walji will have special roles in helping the team. Flinders says he hopes Walji will help bond the team and that Park will bring competitive spirit.
Park says she is excited to be on a good team this year and have a different experience from the previous year.
“Last year’s team was very relaxed, and it was more of a practice year. But I think this year’s team will be a lot more focused and motivated considering we have new freshmen who play a lot,” Park said.
Additionally, Flinders described his short-term and long-term goals for the upcoming season and the future.
“Short term this year is I want to have six to seven players experience tournaments and pressure,” Flinders said. “Our long-term is having a competitive spirit and having a fierce mindset.”
