With a recent departure from the girls varsity lacrosse team, a new position for head coach became available.
Sports Performance Specialist Katherine Zarembski stepped in to fill the role. Zarembski has a history in women’s lacrosse, as she has coached multiple youth teams including both the Yeti Lacrosse and Grit Lacrosse club teams, and played at her alma mater, Northern Michigan University.
“[My] short-term goal is obviously to get a couple of wins under our belt, and then long-term goals for the season is to continue to have the program grow and for the girls to get a good skill set,” Zarembski said.
Being a Sports Performance Specialist, Zarembski is able to specialize in team workouts to strengthen certain areas she has seen on the field that she feels need improvement.
In addition to the skills and fitness themselves, Zarembski recognizes the importance of team chemistry and showing respect for teammates.
“My coaching philosophy revolves around being a team and making sure that everyone on the team is being respected,” Zarembski said.
Additionally, Zarembski is assisted by Upper School Math teacher Melissa Battis. Battis played lacrosse in high school and coached the sport at Greenhill for five years when she first arrived in 2005.
“I coached middle school for a while, but I also started being the assistant varsity coach,” Battis said.
The coaches say they are specifically working to improve the players’ mechanics, including flawlessly picking up a ground ball, passing and catching and hitting the net on any shot.
“I like the fact that I’m watching them on defense and they’re all talking and communicating and sort of directing people where they need to be,” Battis said.
Both Zarembski and Battis say they hope to recreate the team’s outcome from last season, by achieving second place at the state tournament. They currently have a 0-3 record.
