Eighth grade faculty has begun relaying trip plans and logistical aspects to students in preparation for the annual Nov. D.C. trip.
Each trip has its unique circumstances, with this one having potential challenges such as the upcoming class and midterm elections.
“Capitol Hill has some unique challenges when you’re going during midterm elections because Congress members are not going to be on the Hill,” Eighth grade Team Leader Kara Smith said.
Even with these possible obstacles, Eighth Grade Advisor Suzanne Yaffe believes that this trip will be a great learning experience for the students.
“I can say with confidence every year the students ride to the occasion and are able to discern the value that this opportunity gives them to understand more about our democracy, our government, [and] their role future civic leaders,” Yaffe said.
Lots of excitement has been relayed to the class along with prep in other subjects than the preparation time during student life.
“They’re doing work on investigating issues that are important to them and what democratic values they prioritize and where candidates stand on some of those issues,” Smith said.
According to Smith, she’s excited for the students and what they will get out of the trip.
“I think what brings me personally the most joy is knowing that it’s the most exciting and memorable moment of not just eighth grade but middle school,” Smith said.
The eighth grade team expresses their hope that the trip will leave an impact on students socially.
“It’s about really envisioning how you can advocate for yourself and others and ‘be the change that you want to see’ in all of the communities that reach your part,” Smith said. “You grow so much together socially and bond and we have things that we can spotlight for the rest of the year and kind of build from.”
However, some students feel the trip burdens them on top of extracurriculars and schoolwork.
“Preparation is going well but is overwhelming because it’s a new process that’s added to schoolwork” eighth grader Santiago Richey said.
Students are talking about social aspects of the trip, including room assignments.
“I’m very excited yet anxious to see who I room with,” Richey said. “I’ve heard it’s important for your overall experience.”
