Toya Cook – Second Grade

A native of Louisiana, Cook is a new second grade teacher in the Lower School.

She says she loves learning so much that she can’t choose a favorite thing about it. But she is especially fond of language arts and reading.

“I started my teaching career as an elementary reading interventionist,” Cook said. “I knew I needed to be a teacher when I felt bad not being at work to witness students learning new things, becoming confident in their abilities, and enjoying school in general.”

Cook says she was inspired to work at Greenhill by her cousin, David Henderson, who teaches Lower School physical education and coaches basketball, track and cross country.

“I thought Greenhill would be a great place for Ms. Cook because of her work ethic and her delivery with her students,” Henderson.

Cook says she has found many friends across campus.

“I have definitely met an abundance of sweet and helpful people that I can go to for various reasons,” Cook said in an email response to questions. “Whether that be for a laugh (Mrs. Margo Hall), curriculum support (second grade team), or just to express my feelings (Mrs. Rima Zachariah, Nicole Jones, and Ms. Meagan Collier).”

Cook added, “I hope to achieve a better sense of equity in teaching my students, allowing others to experience my whole self without hesitation, and just to embrace and enjoy all of what Greenhill has to offer.”
