The second grade hall was bustling with excitement and hunger as the second grade 2024 Chili Cook-Off took place. Throughout the second grade pod, there were tables lining the walls with an assortment of different chilies.
Each second grade homeroom class was split into four groups tasked with creating their own concoction of chili with secret recipes. With the help of parent volunteers, each group aimed to create the best chili so they could win bragging rights and a certificate.
Sophomore Lillian Smith is still exercising her bragging rights eight years after her over-the-top chili that won first place.
“I have won many things in my life, but no victory tasted as good as that one,” Smith said.
There were a variety of different ingredients in the chilis, including beef, pinto beans, peppers and much more.
After tasting multiple different chilies, consumers of the chili voted on a plethora of categories and their opinion of the best overall chili.
The winner is yet to be announced, but some prominent contestants include, “The Red Chefs,” “Turning Red Chili,” “Texas Best Chili,” “Texas Longhorns Vegetarian Chili” and “Three Bean Chilax”.
“The Red Chefs Turning Red Chili” was a scrumptious success. The mixture of beef, beans and other ingredients created a party for our tastebuds. Out of all the chilis Smith tried, this was her overall favorite.
“Texas Best Chili” ignited a homey taste that filled us with Texas spirit. Sophomore Vivian White is confident in this chili as her overall favorite.
“Texas Longhorns Vegetarian Chili” was an inclusive option for those who observe the diet. Though there was no meat, the mixture of vegetables and other ingredients was quite delightful. Together, we can both agree that this was our favorite vegetarian chili.
“Three Bean Chilax” was soothing and delicious. By using a surplus of different beans, the flavor profile expanded beyond those of your typical chili. Adding on to the selection of vegetarian options, we voted this one as the most interesting and creatively named.
This second grade tradition is an event the Greenhill community looks forward to year after year and hopes to see continued for a long time. Congratulations to all the participants for their hard work and service to the community through the creation of this amazing experience.
