On Jan. 24, the Greenhill boys varsity soccer team celebrated senior night with a 2-1 victory over St. Stephen’s Episcopal School on Brinkmann Field.
Senior Liam Fagelman scored the game’s first goal late in the first half. After St. Stephen’s tied the game in the second half, with only seconds to spare in the game, senior Alex Sharma put Greenhill back in the lead with a game-winning goal assisted by Fagelman.
“It was a really special moment for us seniors,” Sharma said. “Scoring the goal to take the lead on senior night and having Liam assist it made it even more special.”
The win was another addition to Greenhill’s resurgence following an earlier loss this season to Cistercian Preparatory School.
“We practiced the day after the Cistercian game, and to be frank, it did not go too well,” Fagelman said. “But one of our coaches gave us a pep talk that we all needed to hear. There has been a tremendous difference since then, especially from the younger players, in how we approach games and practice.”
The team kept their momentum alive the day after the St. Stephen’s win, scoring three goals in the first half resulting in a 3-0 win versus St. Andrew’s Episcopal School. The early lead prompted Head Varsity Boys Soccer Coach Paul Field to give many of the starters a rest in the second half.
“I think we have really hit our stride as a team,” Fagelman added. “The focus and effort from everyone have been incredible.”
Sharma shared a similar sentiment.
“We are locked in right now,” Sharma said. “The chemistry on this team is unmatched, and we are hungry for more.”
The team currently sits at number two in the Southwest Preparatory Conference standings with a 5-1-1 conference record after a battle with the Fort Worth Country Day Falcons that ended in a 2-2 draw on Jan. 28.
The team’s next game is on Friday, Jan. 31 in Arlington as they take on the Oakridge School.
“We believe that we have a shot at winning the SPC Championship, and based on the way we have been playing, we can compete with anybody in the SPC,” Sharma said.
