As spring season approaches, the varsity boys tennis team has been working with two preseason workouts a week to ensure they are in good shape for tryouts and the season.
Head Coach Scott Cotton has been coaching tennis at Greenhill for twenty years.
Cotton says he thought the team played well last year but let down during the Southwest Preparatory Conference tournament following the loss of a top player due to COVID-19.
This sentiment was echoed by multiple returning players on the team.
“We had a good regular season last year, but we struggled during SPC,” senior Iyad Mohammed said.
Now, members of the team are looking ahead to this season.
“The team worked hard last year, and we are excited for the upcoming season,” sophomore Vincent Le said.
The seniors on the team are Safin Stefanos, Ravi Vasan, Mohammed, and Aditya Pulipaka.
The boys have also been spending time in the High-Performance Center to help prepare for the upcoming season.
The team tryouts are around a week-long process where they make selections for both varsity and junior varsity. There are fifteen varsity players and five junior varsity players this year.
Junior varsity is a program where players can develop their tennis and hopefully eventually contribute to the varsity team later.
“Coach watches how they play during singles matches, doubles matches, drills and fitness levels to determine if they are fit enough for the team,” Mohammed said.
Going into this new season, the team, however, has the same mantra as usual.
“We always say three things: work hard, have fun and compete,” Cotton said.
