Faustino “Tino” Torres, a member of Greenhill’s Facilities Operations and Services team since 1979, passed away on Monday, July 22 after an extended illness.
Torres worked at Greenhill for 45 years and was known by many for his strong work ethic and happiness while outdoors.
In honor of Torres, Greenhill flew their flag at half-mast for a week and painted an emblem on Brinkmann Field for the football game on Sept. 6.
“Everywhere you go he’s been, he knows every place,” Facility Operations and Services team member Zach Stephens said. “Tino Torres was Greenhill.”
Facility Operations and Services team member Taylor Patzig echoes this sentiment.
“He knew every blade of grass here,” said Patzig.
Torres worked mainly in grass keeping and was dubbed as “the grass whisperer” by Associate Head of School for Mission, Community, and Culture Tom Perryman.
“Anytime something didn’t look right, he would fix it, and nobody would know,” said Stephens.
Torres was also the manager of Brinkmann Field and worked towards keeping it in pristine condition at all times.
“The main thing I remember about him was how much attention he paid to every little detail,” said Patzig.
Former and current football players say they appreciated the hard work that Torres put into the field.
“Brinkmann field was always in the best condition of any field I’ve ever played on, and I think Tino definitely played a large part in that,” said Mateo Lanzillotta ’24.
Torres’ impact extended beyond the Greenhill campus, as many players and coaches from opposing teams acknowledged how well the field was taken care of.
For two years, Torres held the title of longest standing Greenhill employee and helped continue the tradition of lighting the Founders’ Day candle during those two years.
“I miss everything about him,” said Stephens. “I used to see him every day.”
