The Anthony Davis era in Dallas ended almost as quickly as it began. The Dallas Mavericks traded the 10-time All-Star to the Washington Wizards just before the NBA trade deadline on Thursday, Feb. 5.  

The Mavericks sent Davis, along Jaden Hardy, Dante Exum, and D’Angelo Russell in exchange for Khris Middleton, AJ Johnson, Tyus Jones, Marvin Bagley III, a 2026 first- round pick, a 2030 first- round pick and three future second- round picks.  

For Dallas, the trade reflects a reset after a gamble that never reached its full potential. Davis arrived with superstar expectations and, while he lived up to the hype when he played, injuries defined the majority of his time here.  

He appeared in limited games, preventing  the Mavericks from building consistent chemistry and flow around him.  

This trade adds depth, financial safety, and future young talents through draft assets, which could benefit the franchise for long term success and dominance.  

The Wizards are betting on Davis to lead the team as a franchise-changing presence along with superstar Trae Young. When healthy, some would argue that Davis is one of the top five big men in the league and arguably the best defender in the NBA.  

Davis provides the Wizards with two-way versatile as he is a dominant scorer inside and an elite defender across the floor.   

However, concerns about durability remain, as Davis’s age and recent injuries have raised doubts about whether he can be relied on long term.  

The deal drew strong attention across the NBA, raising questions about whether Dallas sold low or made a smart move to cut its losses. Some analysts view it as the Mavericks officially closing the book on an experiment that never reached its full potential. As of now, the Mavericks are all in on rookie Cooper Flagg, who has shown potential after making a comeback from a weak start of the season.  

Others believe Washington could win the trade if Davis stays healthy and returns to elite form. However, this is very uncertain given his history of injuries.  

This trade reshapes the future and trajectory for both teams as one of the biggest trades this season. Dallas chose flexibility and future potential while Washington reached for immediate star power and a veteran to mentor their young core.   

For the Mavericks, whether the trade becomes a smart rebuild move or a risky gamble will all depend on Davis’s health and future production .
