Sophomore and Chinese IV student Anya He earned the silver award in the 21st National CLASS Essay Contest.
The contest objective was to write a one-page essay in Chinese with a given prompt. This year, the prompt was to discuss the benefits of sports.
Though He is only in Chinese IV, she competed in the heritage division of the contest. The heritage division is designated for those who speak Chinese at home or if it was their first language.
He says she was able to take her experience as a softball player and write about her growth and experience through athletics. She expressed how exercise and team training have significantly benefited her life.
“To me, the benefits of sports are, first of all, they keep you physically healthy and fit,” He said. “Secondly, doing sports teaches you a lot of problem-solving and teamwork skills.”
For several years, He has played softball for several years, participating both on club and school teams.
“I put a lot of time and effort into it, and with that I have seen myself get a lot better,” He said.
Additionally, He’s Chinese experience expands beyond the classroom.
“Both of my parents are immigrants from China,” He said. “I have just been picking it up around the house since I was little.”
For He’s success in the contest, she was rewarded a certificate prize.
“I definitely enjoyed participating in this contest and look forward to doing it again next year,” He said.
