Senior Jason Estrada is making a name for himself through running track and field at Greenhill and committing to run at a higher level for Brown University.

Earlier this year, Estrada announced his commitment to Brown University for track and field. He started track in seventh grade but did not realize his talent until freshmen year when he ran a 400-meter dash in 52.29 seconds.

“I started to realize that if I truly trained myself and worked out, I could be really good at this race and at this sport. The rest is history,” said Estrada.

His athletic career at Greenhill has not gone unnoticed by his coaches or those who have mentored him throughout the years.

“I’m extremely proud of him,” Track and Field Head Coach Stacey Johnson said. “I think that [Brown] is a great place for him and is an amazing environment to continue his academic and athletic career.”

His coaches aren’t the only ones with praises to sing.  Teammates who have competed alongside Estrada have also talked about their positive experiences with him.

Estrada has also competed in a wide variety of events during his time at Greenhill, including but not limited to the 400-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, the 100-meter dash, and the 4×100 meter relay.

“Jason is unique in that he just wants to do everything,” Johnson said. “There are so many races where he was the clear underdog and finds a way to perform at his best and win.”

Another accomplishment that Estrada is known for achieving at Greenhill was the record-breaking time for the 4×100 meter dash relay with Broderic Houston, Joshua Timmons and Jadon Watt.

Estrada’s team raced in the 4×100 meter relay at the Texas Relays at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, which hasn’t been done in over 20 years for the Greenhill track and field team.

Estrada looks forward to continuing his track career at the collegiate level and enduring a new set of challenges.

“You need to be able to handle setbacks and need to be able to handle the pressure,” Estrada said.  “Being able to calm yourself and your mind before the race is essential to reduce the nerves and to run a good time.”
