Greenhill MS Office Coordinator Mary Stefano was inducted into the Eastern Pennsylvania Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
Stefano began her career in both competitive lacrosse and field hockey in the seventh grade and played both sports until she graduated high school in 1983. She continued to compete in both sports throughout college but eventually chose lacrosse.
“I preferred playing field hockey at the time, but as I got older, I started to enjoy lacrosse more and more,” Stefano said. “I was able to play on the national team in lacrosse, so it kind of chose me.”
Her lacrosse career began at Moorestown High School in New Jersey. During her high school years, Stefano became a member of the All-South Jersey Team and won the New Jersey state championship in 1993.
Stefano continued playing lacrosse at Penn State University and became captain in her senior year. Under her guidance, the team secured their first National Collegiate Athletic Association and their fourth overall national title.
After graduating college in 1987, Stefano played for the Philadelphia Club Lacrosse team for ten years.
“I played on a club based in the Philadelphia area because that’s where lacrosse is really big,” said Stefano. “We could go to and play against all the different regions, which is how I ended up in Pennsylvania.”
During this time, she also played at the international level. Stefano was on a United States Women’s National Team from 1986 to 1993 and belonged to the 1989 and 1993 World Cup Gold Medal teams.
Leading up to her induction into the New Jersey Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1997, Stefano was the 1994 recipient of the Beth Allen Award, which is an honor given to a member of the U.S. Lacrosse Women’s Division who “excels on the field and positively represents her team at the National Tournament.”
Stefano was also inducted into the U.S. National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2010. But despite all these honors and awards, this part of her life is not known to many at Greenhill.
“Since everything was on the East Coast, no one really knows that part of my existence,” said Stefano.
Stefano was brought to Greenhill in 2019 by her husband’s job and her daughter’s fellowship. Per her daughter’s suggestion, she began working as a middle school lacrosse and junior varsity field hockey coach.
“I love coaching the students here because they’re committed to getting better,” said Stefano. “They’re easy to coach, so I just enjoy being around them.”
