While the Greenhill Hornets lost to the Oakridge Owls by a score of 14-28, they were in a position to make the SPC 3A State Championship prior to the game, a historic milestone for the program.
With a win vs. Oakridge, the Hornets were in position to play at the SPC championship, a feat which only the team expected to accomplish.
“The hope and goal for every team is to win a championship, but we came into this thing with the expectation of getting better, building confidence in what we were doing, and then a light switched on in our teams head that this thing was possible,” said Head Football Coach KJ Williams.
This year, the football team finished with five wins, a vast improvement over last year’s two-win season and the best season they have had in 7 years.
Williams believes that the potential SPC visit has been long overdue.
“We had the talent with the guys last year, but everything we installed was really new,” said Williams. “The guys are starting to get used to it now, which is the reason for our success.”
Team spirit and pride was also much improved since last year.
“The team morale towards the end of this season was much more positive overall compared to the same time last year,” said Senior Captain Garret Koerner.
A new addition to the team, Sophomore Trey Davis said before the Oakridge loss, “It’s been a very fun season so far, but making SPC would be awesome, and I think all of the team’s hard work makes us deserving to make it in.”
The Hornets are treating this game as the rest of their regular season games.
“We’re just going to keep playing the same game we’ve been playing all season, the pressure doesn’t phase us,” said Williams.
