Nick Saldivar has always been passionate about sports, but it wasn’t until his freshman year of college that he realized athletic training was his true calling. Now, Coach Sal—as the students like to call him—is the new director of sports medicine at Greenhill.
Saldivar’s interest in athletic training sparked during his time at the University of Texas at Austin, where he was torn between pursuing physical therapy and athletic training. A high school friend already in the athletic training program ultimately influenced his decision to make the switch.
“He said he was already getting a lot of hands-on experience, working with athletes one-on-one, and was able to go to all the games for free,” Saldivar said. That was enough to convince him to make the change.
“I loved the idea of being directly involved with athletes and sports programs. I felt like I could really make an impact,” he said. “The opportunity to be on the field and work with teams was exactly what I was looking for.”
Saldivar’s passion for athletic training deepened throughout college and led him to pursue the career full-time.
After working at other Dallas-area high schools, Saldivar was hired by Greenhill in the midst of the busy fall season.
“Making this transition in the middle of the year was a challenge,” he said. However, Saldivar quickly felt integrated into the community, with athletes, coaches, and staff making him feel welcomed and supported.
“The culture at Greenhill is incredible. Everyone, from the athletes to the staff, is so welcoming, and it really makes all the difference when you’re settling into a new role,” he said.
Saldivar enjoys the fast pace of Greenhill athletics.
“There’s always something happening here. One season flows right into the next, and that constant action keeps me on my toes,” he added. “It’s a great environment for professional growth.”
Out of all the sports he supports, soccer remains Saldivar’s favorite. A lifelong player, he has a deep understanding and connection to the sport.
“I’ve been involved with soccer for as long as I can remember,” he said.
Saldivar prioritizes the well-being of his athletes, encouraging them to focus not only on performance but also on overall health.
“High school athletes need to understand that it’s not just about showing up to practice. To succeed long-term, they need to take care of their bodies,” Saldivar said. “Nutrition, hydration, recovery, and sleep are just as important as the training they do on the field. Athletes who pay attention to their overall health are more likely to go further. It’s about creating a foundation that lasts beyond just the current season.”
While Saldivar’s professional life keeps him busy, he prioritizes staying active and grounded outside of work. Whether it’s pickup soccer, biking, or participating in a recreational bowling league, he finds joy in movement. Most importantly, spending time with friends and family helps him recharge.
“Spending time with loved ones helps me stay focused and balanced—it keeps me going,” he said.
