As the Greenhill football team embarks on a fresh school year, new players and staff join the team and lead the Hornets to win their first football game in over four years.
Along with fresh faces came hard work during the preseason, including practices lasting up to five hours during the summer and regular practices multiple times a day once school started. With all the energy and hard work players put into the team, students and staff alike had high hopes for the upcoming season.
As Friday, Sept. 1 approached, the halls were buzzing with anticipation for the school year’s first pep rally and football game – with the theme being red, white and blue.
“The energy is like night and day; there is a much more positive mindset within the team, and we are hoping for a win this Friday,” said senior Max Meyer
During the in-school pep rally, both Middle and Upper School students enjoyed activities such as musical chairs, and performances from the drumline and cheerleaders. The cheer team has also contributed to the excitement about the first football game.
“With new talent and choreography, the cheer team is thrilled to start a new year and show the students our new cheers,” said junior Ashley Weinstein.
During the game, the stands were filled with students, parents and staff; all there to support the football team in their opening game. According to Meyer, the overwhelming support for the team could be felt through the constant cheering coming from all the supporters in the stands.
The football team started their season off with a long-awaited win, beating the Coram Deo Lions with a score of 49 to 20. This is the first time Greenhill has won a football game since 2019, and for many high school students, it is the first win they have witnessed on Brinkman Field.
With the win bringing cheerful attitudes all around campus, students are excited to continue to support the Greenhill Hornets.
