Three Greenhill winter sports teams made it to the 4A Championships at the winter Southwest Preparatory Conference championships, with boys varsity basketball winning an SPC title.
All winter sports teams competed from Feb. 13-15 in Fort Worth, TX, however, the girls soccer championships were the previous weekend. Girls Varsity Soccer was the seventh seed and finished in seventh place with a 2-1 win against Houston Christian High School.
“It was really intense, and our team put in a lot of hard work,” freshman Sonam Sehgal said.
Both Greenhill boys and girls swim teams placed 3rd in the 4A division. Last year, both teams won their divisions in the tournament, Girls 4A and Boys 3A.
“It was very triumphant knowing that we placed third, even though we are in a new division,” junior Aiden White said. “I love the team and can not wait to lead the charge next year.”
The girls basketball team placed second, falling short to The Kinkaid School 80-61. The team was the second seed and had two wins over the Hockaday School in the first round and Episcopal High School, last year’s champions, in the semifinals.
“Though the season did not end the way we wanted,” sophomore Ava John said. “Each and every one of the girls on the team believed in each other and we tried our best.”
Boys soccer also made it to the championship game but lost 3-0 to Episcopal High School.
The team was seeded first in their bracket and received a first-round bye in the tournament. They defeated the St. Marks School of Texas in the semifinals, winning in penalty kicks.
Finally, the Greenhill boys basketball team defeated Episcopal High School 79-65 to win the 4A Boys championship.
They started as the third seed and defeated St. Stephen’s Episcopal School 70-45 in the first round. They then defeated St. Marks 60-58, advancing to the 4A championship.
“The success of the team comes from the true friendship between everyone,” sophomore Sam Schultz said. “It is the reason we have so much chemistry and success on the court.”
