Multiple schools from across Dallas gathered on Friday, Jan. 16 for the Winter Hornet Night at Greenhill, a campus-wide event with all the winter season sports competing against key rivals.
Greenhill boys junior varsity and varsity basketball teams competed against St. Mark’s School of Texas; girls varsity basketball faced Texas Home Educators Sports Association, and girls junior varsity and varsity soccer took on The Hockaday School.
Boys and girls basketball games were in the Phillips Gym. Fans and families filled the stands and cheered for each team putting up a fight.
The Greenhill varsity boys basketball team had been preparing for their game against St. Mark’s varsity team for weeks due to the rivalry between the schools. Though the Hornets were up 49-48 in the last few seconds of the game, the game ended on last second tip-in buzzer-beater by St. Marks senior Pranav Danda, resulting in 50-49 loss for Greenhill.
“The team was excited to play, and our goal was to not let the emotions and distraction get in the way of how we perform,” senior Kameron Smith said.
Boys junior varsity basketball won their game against St. Mark’s.
The girls basketball varsity team played against THESA, one of the best teams in the state. The team stayed competitive throughout the game but suffered a tough loss in the end, 56-71.
“We anticipated an uphill battle due to our previous game with them, so we knew we had to put in more effort and adjust to our surroundings so we could succeed the best we could,” senior captain Kendall Johnson said.
Meanwhile, fans gathered along the sidelines of the soccer fields to support the girls soccer teams playing against Hockaday and the boys teams playing against St. Mark’s.
The girls varsity soccer kept up with the score and ended with a 2-2 tie against Hockaday. The girls JV soccer team suffered a difficult loss, 0-4.
“We learned a lot from each other as a team, and it made us realize how we need to work as a family to progress,” said freshman Mari Clarke said.
The varsity boys soccer team capped off the night 4-2. Senior Remi Joseph scored the opening goal, and sophomore Hayden Miller recorded a hat trick in the win.
