New Upper School science teacher Winfred Parnell MD ’99 saw an opportunity to come back to Greenhill as a teacher and knew he had to take it.
He says he always loved the Greenhill community and would not want to pass up coming back.
Parnell began his teaching career at W.T. White High School in the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) as a biology teacher and taught there before seeking an opportunity at Greenhill.
“I thought it would be cool to come back and hopefully have an impact on some of the students here like my teachers had on me,” said Parnell.
As a student, Parnell moved to Greenhill School from Parish Episcopal School in fifth grade. While at Greenhill he recalls being very involved in the community. He participated in athletic activities such as basketball and tennis, and academic activities such as the stock market club, Montage and student council. He served as student body president during his senior year.
After graduating from Greenhill, Parnell went on to study psychology at Emory University. Upon completion of his undergraduate degree, he attended medical school at The American University of Antigua.
Parnell moved back to Dallas and has lived here since returning, dedicating much of his time to coaching youth sports and participating in volunteer work.
“I love science, [and] the community is still here; the community is still strong,” said Parnell.
Upper School Science Department Chair Treavor Kendall says he is excited to have Parnell back in the Greenhill community.
When hiring Parnell, Kendall says he thought he was a great fit for the teaching position for several reasons including his background, prior teaching experience and his history at Greenhill.
“He has a passion for science [and] has already made great connections with the students. People are clamoring to work with him,” said Kendall.
Parnell says he is very grateful for all that Greenhill has done for him and hopes to give back to the community in every way he can.
“Greenhill has made an everlasting impact on me,” said Parnell.
