Every year, Greenhill students submit applications to Terry Martin, Head of Fine Arts, in hopes of becoming members of the Arts Board.
The Upper School Arts Board is a group of students with grade representatives including sophomores, juniors and seniors.
The Arts Board chairs for the 2023-24 school year are seniors Shreya Ram and Jnana Velamuri, while Martin is the adult sponsor of the board.
The goal of the Arts Board is to promote and support Greenhill Fine Arts students in all of their events whether it be concerts, competitions or musicals.
Additionally, they host “coffee houses,” which are open mic nights where anyone can perform their talents. In the past, there have been students who partake in standup comedy, dancing, singing, playing an instrument or reciting a poem.
“[Coffee houses] aren’t just restricted to music. It’s a platform for any upper school student to perform and showcase their talents,” Ram said.
Junior J.J. Arbuckle says one goal of the board is to encourage students to feel excited about the arts at Greenhill.
One way the board encourages students to attend Fine Art events is by sending out monthly newsletters announcing events occurring that month in hopes of spreading awareness.
The 2023 musical Mean Girls, which was performed from Nov. 15 to 17, has been a primary objective for the board recently.
According to Ram, the Arts Board has been working alongside the musical to help promote it.
“We do work with [musical] a lot, with assembly announcements and things like that,” Ram said.
Arbuckle says he felt passion for doing work to present the musical and has appreciated learning more about the underlying meanings of the production.
“[The musical is] fun but meaningful, there are important and mature themes conveyed through comedy,” Arbuckle said.
Arts Board meetings are senior student led with the help of Martin who is there to set the tone and give direction to the meetings.
