Read Across America is the nation’s largest celebration of reading, inspiring children and teens to read through different activities. This year, the Greenhill Montgomery Library celebrated from Monday, Mar. 4 through Friday, Mar. 8.
“The theme of Read Across America is celebrating a nation of diverse readers,” Preschool and Lower School Librarian Carrie Martin said.
Library classes are participating in this event by finding new books to read aloud, and second, third and fourth grade classes are taking part in a challenge to read books about various cultures and backgrounds different from their own.
“We are trying to read a wide variety of books and trying to read books about other people and their stories, and people that look differently than you, or live differently than you,” Martin said.
The books out on display for the students to read and check out for Read Across America are centered around celebrating reading. Some of the books include “I Hate Reading” by Beth Beacon, and “Hooray for Reading Day” by Margery Cuyler.
Additionally, this event teaches the students about gratefulness and brings awareness to the fact that some kids do not have the same luxuries as them when it comes to reading books.
“[The program] helps the kids understand how lucky they are to have a library and to have books to read aloud,” Martin said.
