The Hornets Nest Instagram account is a social media hub for Greenhill’s sports teams that has gained traction in recent years, providing students and alumni with reports on athletic events. The account showcases game highlights, athlete spotlights and livestreams of games.
Athletic Department Coordinator Izayah Donnelly, who oversees the account, says it plays a vital role in keeping both students and fans engaged.
“It is a place where students can highlight their athletic success,” Donnelly said. “We found that last year representation was not equal across the board, so some teams would not get as much media coverage compared to others.”
In years prior, the account was run by members of the Athletics Board. Mateo Lanzilotta ’24, who had involvement with the account, says the account being in the hands of students led to certain sports receiving significant coverage while other teams saw no coverage.
“It was hard for all of us to enjoy going to the not so popular sporting events, which I think made it much harder for us to equally cover them,” Lanzilotta said.
Now, with the account being run by Donnelly, each athletic team is receiving equal coverage.
According to Donnelly, the account, which now boasts over 1,500 followers, started as a way to share updates, but has grown into a platform for celebrating athletes’ accomplishments.
“Whenever I have tournaments or practices and I am unable to attend the games, [this account is] a great resource to stay updated on the sporting events,” senior Rhett Mulder said.
Looking ahead, Donnelly says he is excited about the potential for the account’s future growth.
