On Sept. 25, students took a break from classes to explore the many groups across campus at the Student Activities Fair.
In previous years, the event was named the Club Fair. This year, the decision was made to change the title to the Student Activities Fair to better encompass the various student groups, according to Kira Rivera, Upper School Dean of Student Life.
Each group falls into one of four categories: clubs, which are student-led activities; competitive groups, such as student government, DECA, and math teams; programs, teacher-led activities open to all students; and affinity groups, which bring together students with shared identities or interests.
Rivera took charge on setting up the event, with senior Kendall Johnson, student body executive vice president, assisting.
“[Johnson] is really overseeing student activities,” Rivera said. “She’s my partner, so, Kendall, this year has been basically running all of the club meetings, and she’s been amazing at it.”
Student leaders of each club created presentations for the day of the fair to attract peers to join their clubs. These presentations consisted of a tri-fold poster, a mission statement, and outlined plans for future meetings.
“I’ve had a really positive experience,” senior Dylan Considine said. “Me and [senior] Scarlett [Song] have worked really well together making the poster and planning.”
All Upper School students attended the fair, which took place on the Upper School Courtyard during hornet block. Sophomore Ethan Sadka says the space allowed students to walk around to various activities while being able to mingle with friends as well.
“I think it’s pretty cool that everyone wants to be here to see what’s going on at school, be a part of the community, and be social,” sophomore Katelyn Herlitz said.
As well as enjoying the experience, students say they felt the event was informative. Freshman Serena Lobel says it allowed students to both branch out into new activities and dive deeper into topics they already have a passion for.
“I think it’s a really great opportunity for kids to lead their own clubs,” freshman Aditi Karthik said. “A lot of them [activities] are a mix of academic clubs and also just clubs for fun.”
Junior Valentina Rojas, an activity leader says the fair was a great success, allowing her to directly speak to students about her group. Many say they felt their hard work paid off and were excited after seeing the new signups for their activities.
“The people who are signing up [for her club] are really committed to coming, so I’m really happy about that,” Rojas said.
Overall, students and faculty say the fair had a great turn out and represented the Greenhill community strongly.
“It’s really cool to see students meet and excel the bar and I’m excited to see how the clubs come to life,” Rivera said leading up to the event.
