To raise student support and attract larger crowds to cheer on Greenhill Sports, senior Santiago Lopez and classmates in Advanced Computer Science created the Rally website. The website provides an online location for students to accumulate points by attending Greenhill athletic events and in turn earn prizes.
Lopez says the inspiration behind this new website came from a lack of support from the student body and low attendance at games of certain teams.
“There are a lot of sports at Greenhill that don’t get the same attention as certain sports, like football or basketball,” Lopez said. “So, we wanted to know if there was a way that we could use computer science to create more popularity for sports that don’t get enough attention.”
Students can check in on the Rally website once they have attended a sports event, with the website using location technologies to validate their attendance. By attending sports events, students earn points that go towards prizes such as a lunch pass that allows them to skip the lunch line.
“It motivates me to go to more sporting events, and I like how there are prizes to work towards,” freshman Victoria Gonchar said. “I’m already sixth place on the leaderboard and have 27 points.”
Lopez says his goal is not only to increase attendance at sporting events but also to expand the platform to areas of the Greenhill community including fine arts programs.
“We have future plans to update and remove things and add fine arts events,” Lopez said.
The Rally team hopes by expanding the website to the fine arts, morale will be boosted across many areas.
So far, the website has received attention from Upper School students, and students have accumulated points. The leaderboard consists of students who have as many as 37 points so far.
“We currently have about 30 people redeeming points from events,” Lopez said. “We also had a crash on the first day which was about 300 people who logged in.”
The Rally team says they are thrilled with the large amount of traction their new website is already receiving.
“We didn’t think it was going to be that big, but clearly people are interested in getting some of these prizes and supporting their friends too,” Lopez said.
