Senior Amanda Park stepped into the role of Ali in the recent Upper School production of “Mamma Mia!” while balancing her athletic commitments to field hockey.
Park says balancing field hockey and acting left her with little free time, forcing her to make some tough decisions.
“Being so busy with training and rehearsing meant I had to quit my job and occasionally risk going into tests or quizzes unprepared,” Park said. “I decided those were sacrifices I was willing to make.”
Park’s love for performing began as a child, with early experiences in singing, acting and even commercials.
“I did my first musical when I was eight, and I loved it,” Park said. “Getting back into theater last year reminded me how much I enjoy performing.”
This was Park’s second and final musical production at Greenhill. Park says her acting journey includes participating in a variety of productions during her childhood, but her high school musicals have been especially meaningful.
“Last year, I played Gretchen in ‘Mean Girls,’ and I had a lot of fun with the role and connecting with the rest of the cast,” Park said.
In the recent production of “Mamma Mia!” Park played Ali, Sophie, the main charcater’s, energetic and supportive best friend.
“It is a fun and simple role that I can relate to,” Park said in the days before the November performances. “I am excited to bring her to life on stage.”
Beyond the stage, Park balances a rigorous schedule, splitting her time between rehearsals and training as a Division I-bound field hockey player.
“Doing both field hockey and the musical has been challenging, but I have learned so much about time management and prioritizing what is important,” Park said.
Park says she enjoys how theater allows her to unwind and disconnect from the pressures of sports and academics.
“When I am performing, I can forget about everything else for a little while, and that is really nice,” Park said.
With “Mamma Mia!” being Park’s final performance at Greenhill, she says it holds a special place in her heart.
“I am so thankful to have this opportunity to perform one last time,” Park said. “It has been such a great way to finish my high school journey.”
