On Nov. 30, pre-K students participated in a service activity called Pennies to Share.
The goal of this service activity was to affirm that even the youngest people in the Greenhill community can contribute to charitable organizations and was created by long-time pre-K teacher Greg Browne-Nichols.
“During the year, students are creating projects so that they can sell them to the community,” Browne-Nichols said.
Browne-Nichols says the pre-K students were very excited about the event and to help their community.
“We made earrings, necklaces and keychains,” pre-K student Ameena DeBose said.
On the morning of the event, parents came in to purchase items the students made. They paid with dollar bills or 100 pennies. In addition to the earrings, necklaces and keychains, students also made coloring books and cards.
“The proceeds are used to purchase stuffed animals to donate to the fire department,” Browne-Nichols said.
Pre-K teacher Shehnaz Makhani says she was happy the students could help their community.
“We wanted to find a project that was easily comprehensible to four and five-year-olds,” Makhani said. “For them, a stuffed animal is something that they can all relate to, so that’s how this idea came about.”
