Greenhill’s Upper School’s Hornet Robotics has more than doubled in size, growing from 12 members last year to 24 this fall.
Most new team members are sophomores and upperclassmen, with only two freshmen joining this year. Robotics teacher Joseph Meagher said recommending talented students to join robotics is a partial reason for this.
“There’fs a lot of really smart kids on campus, and I just want to make sure that they get exposure to robotics, even if they don’t do it for the rest of their life,” said Meagher. “This might be the only chance they get to go play with things like that.”
There has also been an increase in female participation in robotics, with the team now having seven women on the team, compared to just one female member last year. Meagher mentioned this was one of his goals.
“We’ve really pushed for more women representation on the team,” Meagher said. “In a co-ed school when we go to an event with other schools, we need more women engineers there.”
The team is currently working on learning fundamentals and brainstorming for the new season. The team’s first competition is in October, and junior Tej Sachdeva is excited about what the new members will bring.
“Last year we had a lot to do and not enough hands to do it,” Sachdeva said. “So, the bigger team is now letting us divide and conquer more easily. A lot of people on one project can get it done a lot faster.”
