After spending a year working off campus as a children’s book buyer for several bookstores, former middle school librarian Stephanie Ledyard has returned to Greenhill to teach creative writing.
Ledyard now teaches seventh and eighth graders in the middle school, stepping into the role previously held by Susie Rubin, who retired at the end of the 2024-25 school year. Ledyard is also the author of three children’s books: Super Baby, Pie is for Sharing and Home is a Window.
Ledyard said she has felt welcomed by colleagues since returning to campus.
“I went to go do something that seemed like [it] might be in support of my writing career,” Ledyard said.
But she explained that being away also reminded her how much she missed the school.
“I really missed the Greenhill vibe and the spirit and the sort of zany fun that is Greenhill,” Ledyard said.
Ledyard said she first learned that the creative writing position might open while attending the annual Texas Library Association Conference in San Antonio. When she heard Rubin was retiring, she reached out to Susan Palmer, head of middle school, and expressed interest in the job.
Palmer said the decision was straightforward.
“It’s been a no-brainer for me because first of all she’s a published writer, she knows the writing process and she just cares so much,” said Palmer.
Students have also responded positively to her return.
“I’m really excited to have her back on campus,” said seventh grader Julia Pinho, a creative writing student in Ledyard’s class.
Because the creative writing position is part-time, Ledyard also substitutes for other teachers and spends time in the library, where she previously worked.
“I’m a regular visitor to the library as a teacher.” Ledyard said. “I’m kind of like a library nerd. Everybody should use the library.”
