The Greenhill Varsity Baseball team fills its recent coaching vacancies with pitching coach Chris Maffie. 

The COVID-19 pandemic posed many challenges for coaches across the country. Specifically, finding new assistants for head coach Tory Haugen was a difficult task. A couple months before the season started, Haugen hired Chris Maffie to be his right-hand man for the upcoming 2021 season. 

Maffie has taken over the position as the pitching coach. He works with pitching staff during practices and has been the leader in selecting the pitching rotation. 

“Coach Chris has been an awesome addition to our team. He has blended with the team very well. His age also contributes to his ability to understand our perspectives as high school athletes,” said sophomore Drew Muller. 

Mafee grew up in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. He attended Denton Guyer for high school and he shared what his highschool experience was like.

“In high school I wasn’t the biggest or fastest guy,” said Maffie. But I had a real love and knowledge for the game which I see in all the kids on the team and what makes me excited to come coach everyday.” 

Maffie works with the pitchers every day during bullpen sessions or during warm ups to try to make sure they are being the most efficient with their pitching motion and arm recovery after a pitching outing. 

“He always gives me tips on how to put less stress on my arm during my delivery and also how to take care of my arm after an outing,” said senior pitcher Ben Didlake. “He has made me realize how important arm care is to a successful and healthy season.”
