This year, Greenhill has reinstated the midterm exam period in February. This is the first time in 5 years the midterms will be held, as they were removed in the 2020-2021 school year due to the pandemic.
Many different students have had different reactions to the exams being added back to the curriculum. Sophomore Lucy Kim says she is not worried about the exams currently but is more concerned about the exams in her harder exams and having many summative assignments leading up to them.
“I’m not too worried right now,” said Kim. “But for my harder classes like Math, Spanish, and Chemistry I’m kind of stressed because of all the summative assignments beforehand, so it’s not going to be easy leading up.”
Junior Sophie Caruthers says she understands the idea behind bringing them back but is nervous as some of them are growth opportunities and are overall a big part of the course grade.
“I get where they’re coming from and think in the end it will be a good thing but I’m a little stressed,” said Caruthers. “They make up a big part of my grade and it’s a growth opportunity for previous tests.”
Some of the students have also never taken exams like this, only briefly having one or two exams in middle school.
“In seventh grade, I had an end-of-year assessment, but it wasn’t as important or as big as this is going to be,” said Caruthers.
While exams are not for another few weeks, preparation has been on both Caruthers’s and Kim’s minds. They both say that they have different approaches to how they are planning to study for their exams.
Kim has not started actually studying for her exams yet but has a plan for when she is going to start.
“I’m planning on making study guides for each class and going back to my tests and quizzes and seeing what I need to work on,” said Kim.
Caruthers has already started the preparation for her exams and has started to put time in each week to review the materials.
“I’m trying to study a little bit each week, starting at chapter one and moving on to the next one, and week by week review stuff we’ve done so far,” Caruthers.
