On Friday, Sept. 22, most of Greenhill fall athletes will play in their respective games, which have even more meaning than just any other game. The slate of games will serve as the first Hornet Night of the year.
There is a Hornet Night for each sports season, and it occurs on Friday nights when every sports team plays at home on the same day.
According to Head of Athletics and Physical Education Jarrett Shine, Hornet Night is a great way for people to come together to support their friends and family.
“Hornet Night allows the young kids to participate in all the activities that are happening to get them on campus,” Shine said. “So, there’s a number of things planned to get the kids excited.”
As part of Hornet Night, there will be food trucks, a flag football game during halftime of the football game and kids will run through the football tunnel, Shine says.
The theme for tonight is whiteout. The Athletics Board designed a white t-shirt that students are encouraged to purchase and wear while supporting their fellow classmates. These shirts can be purchased during or prior to the game for $10.
The Athletics Board held a student competition for the design of the t-shirt, and sophomore Olivia Wiles ended up winning the best design.
“We hope that everyone shows out in their white,” senior Zoya Iyer said. “We created the white-out shirts so everyone could be on theme.”
Most teams play at different times during the school week and, oftentimes, it is challenging to get students to show up at games, Iyer says.
Football
The football team will play Fort Worth Country Day at 7 p.m. on Brinkman Field. They head into their first home conference game with a 1 win 2 loss record, coming off a 14-17 loss at John Cooper.
“Last week’s loss was a hard one to take for all of us, but we’re looking to bounce back and take home a win at home this week,” junior Noah Piper said.
Girls Volleyball
Girls Varsity Volleyball will play at 5 p.m. in Phillips Gym against DasCHE. They currently sit at an 8-11 record and are coming off a sweep against the Episcopal School of Dallas.
“We need a big crowd at our game. When we have a big crowd, it gives us energy, which makes us play better,” junior Campbell Sims said.
Boys Volleyball
Boys Varsity Volleyball will play at 6 p.m. in Phillips Gym versus DasCHE. Their current record is 3-2, with their most recent game being a sweep of Fort Worth Country Day on Sept. 14.
“The best part about Hornet Night is that you get to play your sport while other sports are going on, so the vibe of the school is so different because there are so many fans supporting everyone,” junior Alex Sharma said.
Field Hockey
Varsity Field Hockey will play at 6 p.m. on Frankel Field versus the Episcopal School of Dallas.
“I think it’s going to be a really good game because it’s a pretty even match,” senior Susie Fagelman said. “Whenever we have fans out there supporting us, it affects the mood so much, so we would really appreciate it if everyone could come out.”
Cross-Country
Although cross-country does not compete on Hornet Night, they have a race the following day – the Southlake Invitational – on Saturday, Sept. 23. Additionally, seniors on the team will be recognized during halftime of the football game.
Overall, Hornet Night builds community and allows people to come together to support their friends, Iyer says.
“I hope to see supporters making an effort to come to every game, even just for a little bit,” Iyer said. “I’ve learned that a loud and supportive student section is often what players need to push through challenges and win.”
