The boys varsity golf team competed in the Southwest Preparatory Conference Championships held from April 30 – May 1 at the Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas.
The team placed sixth among the 4A schools in the competition. Junior captain Henry Zhong shot 74-71 en route to winning the Individual SPC Championship, meaning that he had the best two-day score out of every individual player in the competition.
“On day two, [Zhong] just took it to a whole new level, shooting one under par,” Head boys golf coach Will Turbyne said.
Golf Club of Houston hosted the Houston Open, a PGA Tour event, from 2003 – 2019. Additionally, the LIV Golf League will host their next tournament at the Golf Club of Houston from June 7 – June 9.
“It was a great venue to test these golfers on,” Turbyne said. “A tough course, challenging but fair. Just a great track.”
Reflecting on his accomplishments, Zhong is grateful that his many years of playing golf have paid off for him. Winning an SPC Championship has been a goal for Zhong since he was in Lower School.
“I think I had a good day just going out there,” Zhong said. “I think it just worked out for me. I have seen the high school team play since I was six years old, and this was a dream for me.”
Next year, Zhong will be a senior, meaning that it will be his last chance to win an SPC Championship with the rest of the Greenhill team.
“We think we can get it done next year, we just need to keep working,” Zhong said.
Turbyne expressed his praise for Zhong’s play at the tournament.
“Greenhill should be really proud of his performance,” Turbyne said. “He went in and won the whole thing. He has had a great season and I look forward to seeing how far he takes his game in the future.”
