On Dec. 18, the kindergarteners will showcase their annual Nutcracker performance in Rose Hall.
This year marks the 74th annual Nutcracker performance. Greenhill’s show is the longest running school production of the Nutcracker in the Dallas metroplex.
The Nutcracker is an event the students look forward to every year, as they are excited to be on the big stage, performing for friends and family. Even though this tradition has gone on for so many years, Lower School Music Teacher Misty Quinn still says she loves teaching the Nutcracker’s songs.
“I never get tired of doing it with the children because it is such beautiful music and I love that they get the opportunity to enjoy the music,” Quinn said.
The show is comprised of each of the four kindergarten classes singing and dancing to two numbers each. The Head of the School, Lee Hark, narrates the show.
“In 1998 when I started teaching here, I started the tradition of the head of school narrating the nutcracker story,” Quinn said.
Additionally, the students get to make ornaments in their art classes to hang on the tree placed on the stage and take the ornaments home after the performance as a keepsake.
The nutcracker is a tradition some Greenhill students love and remember even into their Upper School years. Freshman Sonam Sehgal recalls her experience with the Nutcracker from when she was in Lower School.
“The Nutcracker was a fun experience when I was in Lower School and I still remember it today,” Sehgal said.
The current seniors who attended Greenhill in kindergarten are invited to the performance to watch with their parents. They are also encouraged to take photos with the roles they performed in kindergarten.
