During the holiday season, Greenhill has many traditions including the holiday sing-along, a dance troupe performance, baking and Middle School Fine Arts Department Chair Brian Donnell’s rendition of the “12 Days of Christmas” song.
Sophomore Aidan Rischer joined Dean of Students Jack Oros in decorating cookies last year.
“[Baking] allowed me to connect with my peers and spread holiday cheer,” said Rischer.
Additionally, Kindergarten students perform the Nutcracker for their parents and Lower School students in the days leading up to the Winter Break. Seniors who were in the Nutcracker as Kindergarteners have the opportunity to watch the dress rehearsal.
“It was a full circle moment to see the nutcracker and it was a nice way to celebrate the holidays,” said senior Elizabeth Mann.
Upper School English teacher Linda Woolley has taught at Greenhill for 27 years and has seen many variations of Greenhill traditions, but the last day of school has always been the same with a half day and an assembly.
“The choir, orchestra and band provide such great energy,” said Woolley.
One of the communities the assembly celebrates is the Jewish community with the singing of the Latke song. The performance is interactive because students are picked from the audience to sit on stage and hold up the lyrics to the beat of the song.
“The song makes me reminisce on my Lower School Greenhill years,” said sophomore Sophie Carruthers.
Choir alumni who are in town for the break are invited up on stage to sing “Carol of the Bells” with the current choir.
“This day brings the community together with fun activities and singalongs,” said Wooley.
