As the end of the winter sports season approaches, spring sports teams are ramping up their training through various preseason practices and workouts. The girls varsity softball team has been working throughout the past few months in preparation for their season.
“This is the most dedicated group with attending and communicating,” Head Girls Varsity Softball Coach Monica Stephens said.
The team’s preseason workouts in the HPC are every Tuesday and Thursday. At the start of the season, they will transition to a new schedule revolving around their afternoon practices.
“Preseason workouts have been going very well,” junior captain Sophie Fiedelman said. “Everyone has been very dedicated to the team and has attended every workout they can.”
She says she has been impressed with the team’s commitment and how her teammates have been holding themselves accountable and wanting to improve.
“I think our team’s biggest strength is our work ethic,” junior captain Sami Aidala said. “Everyone gets along very well and is committed to working hard and improving.”
Last season, the team ended 3-3 in counter games losing to Casady School, Fort Worth Country Day School and Hockaday School.
“Every year the competition varies, but the teams in the South Zone tend to be a lot stronger than in the North Zone,” Fiedelman said.
All Greenhill varsity teams have counter games and normal games. Counter games are played within the Southwest Preparatory Conference, while non-counter games do not count toward the team’s record.
“In terms of counter season, I am very optimistic for the season ahead and our ability to beat a few of the teams in the North Zone,” Fiedelman said.
Although the team’s roster does not have any seniors, Fiedelman says she does not foreshadow this to be an issue.
“All the players are very respectful towards each other and hold themselves as well as their teammates accountable,” Fiedelman said.
The team began in-season practices on Jan. 28 for non-winter athletes and will play their first game on Feb. 20 at Prestonwood Christian Academy.
