To begin the winter Southwest Preparatory Conference championships, Girls Varsity Soccer finished seventh place after competing in Fort Worth on Feb. 6-8.
The team went into their first round against the Hockaday school, projected to place seventh according to the SPC website. Despite pushing the game into overtime, the team lost with a final score of 1-0.
“The first game was a testament to what we are fully capable of,” Girls Varsity Soccer Coach Laura Flanagan said. “I have never, probably in my entire coaching career, seen a team fight harder than [our] team did that night.”
After falling short in this round, the team competed in their second game on Friday, Feb 7. with another 1-0 loss.
Finally, the team finished with a win over the Houston Christian School on Feb. 8, earning seventh place in the tournament overall.
“[The team] came together as a group and held on, they showed a lot of maturity in our last game,” Flanagan said.
Flanagan said there were several standout players this season including sophomores Raelyn Young, Alex Han, Sadie Werner and Noora Quereshi, as well as junior Isa Tanner.
Flanagan says Young has especially taken a big leadership role on the team.
“She was playing in a position she would not normally play on her club team, but she still has been a standout,” Flanagan said.
Additionally, Flanagan says the freshmen on the team brought a lot of team spirit and positivity.
“We have a handful of freshmen that stepped on to the team for us who need a pat on the back,” Flanagan said.
