For the second year, Greenhill freshmen are participating in the Our Whole Lives program, which is dedicated to comprehensive sexual education for children, teens and adults.
The program was created by the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ Justice and Witness Ministries, developed with the purpose of empowering participants with accurate information, communication skills and a strong foundation for making responsible and informed decisions about sexual health.
“OWL elaborates on what we’ve learned before, puts it in a different format and teaches other aspects of sexuality, like biology,” freshman Noah Morales said. “I think it’s good to talk [about] identity and how to maintain a good relationship.”
The sessions take place during lunch and Hornet block, with two instructors leading each session. Additionally, one Upper School counselor is in the room to ensure students have a trusted adult to talk to about their experience with the program.
“It [was] chosen because it’s one of the most comprehensive programs out there,” Upper School Counselor Kathy Roemer said. “Freshmen are in relationships, so I think everyone could benefit from sexual health education.”
The OWL program covers a wide range of topics, including anatomy, puberty, relationships, communication, sexual orientation, gender identity, contraception and consent. The program is designed to be adaptable to various cultural, religious and community values, fostering open and respectful dialogue about sexuality.
“I believe that sex education is important to all of us,” Ninth Grade Class Dean Jacobo Luna-Cruz said. “The sooner you become aware of how your values, research, science and well-informed decisions can be made, the better.”
