Sept. 11 marks the founding of Greenhill School. This year, students, faculty, parents and alumni gathered in Phillips Gym to celebrate Greenhill’s 73rd year.
The annual Founders’ Day assembly pays tribute to Greenhill’s founders, Bernard and Helen Fulton. Additionally, the assembly recognizes teachers who reached Legend status by committing 25 years to Greenhill.
Head of School Lee Hark opened the assembly by recognizing that our founding date is shared with one of the most tragic events in American history, the destruction of the World Trade Center Twin Towers in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001.
This speech was followed with another from the senior student body president Iyad Mohammed, who spoke about the importance of making a conscious effort to find peace in everyday life.
“Peace is vital because it’s about how you handle and respond to the world around you – maintaining serenity even when faced with challenges,” Mohammed said.
Songs were scattered throughout the assembly including one about peace and another called “Best Friends”. Both are Greenhill traditions that are sung at every Founders’ Day assembly.
Seniors Jeannette Yang and James Melucci continued the assembly by announcing the renaming of two Heart of the Hill groups, after three influential individuals in Greenhill’s history. One of which was Richard F. Hall, former coach of three Greenhill varsity sports.
The second was named after Randy and Bob Murphy. Prior to retiring in 2016, Randy Murphy dedicated 21 years of her life to teaching at Greenhill.
Additionally, Associate Head of School for Mission, Community, and Culture Tom Perryman shared his remarks regarding the 2023-2024 theme: Designing Our Future.
In a longstanding tradition, the assembly ended with the entire Greenhill community singing of “Hail to Greenhill.”
