The boys varsity cross country A team finished in second place at the 38th Annual Luke’s Locker Six-Mile Relay on Saturday, Aug. 26.
This relay is an annual Greenhill tradition that started over 40 years ago, and it is open to any school that wants to compete. Teams are made up of four runners, and each runner runs the same loop, which adds together to six miles in total.
“There were 44 schools and about 70 teams competing this year,” said Head Coach of Varsity Cross-Country, Jason Yaffe. “Many huge public schools like Flower Mound High School and Norman High School in Oklahoma were also competing in the race.”
The relay-style race is unlike the other races that cross country teams usually run.
“It’s a relay event, which is unique in cross country because we don’t run relays,” said Yaffe. “During the race, the runners also jump over hay bales which makes the race a little different.”
Going into the race, Yaffe did not have expectations and was mainly looking for good efforts from the varsity boys A team made up of junior Chris Williams, senior Andrew Mann, junior Gabriel Shiloh and junior Preston Yoo.
Williams started the team off strong, handing off to Mann in first place. Mann kept the leading position as well as extended it.
“I was surprised [that we got second], but once I saw how far Andrew and I brought our team, then I wasn’t surprised,” said Williams.
Cross-country athletes train and have workouts so that they can express their fitness level during the race.
“I think the race is a great tradition. Our boys finished second, and every other team that ran for Greenhill represented our school well,” said Yaffe.
