On Sept. 7, the boys varsity basketball team competed in the Great American Shootout Fall Classic tournament at the Duncanville Fieldhouse.
Team members note these games were a challenge, as they were missing several starting players.
“We were missing a lot of our star players due to football, which gave us a little setback,” sophomore Sam Schultz said.
The team competed in two games, where they competed against Waco University and Denton Braswell.
The team first played Waco University and won 47-41.
“With some of the starters being gone, I got to play more than I usually would have, which definitely helped boost my confidence,” Schultz said.
Later that day, the team lost to Denton Braswell 53-45.
“It was a tough [loss] and they were a really good team,” Schultz said. “I think if we had all our starting players, we would have won.”
In preparation for the approaching winter sports season, the team has started to practice regularly together in the mornings and after school.
“We went to the High Performance Center every day after school and got that work in,” sophomore Eli Sims said.
With the loss of only one senior last year, players say the team looks to keep building towards a strong winter season.
