The boys swim team won the Metroplex Middle School Championships and the Southwest Preparatory Conference State titles. This marks the first time Greenhill’s swimming teams have won SPC titles, with the girls team winning the SPC championship as well.
The competition was held in Houston, and the first event was with the 200 Medley Relay. From that race until the end of the competition, the boys team maintained a lead. In the championship, there were 13 new school records, five SPC records and 64 personal best times.
The boys swim team is comprised of boys who swim club, which entails practicing every day, and some boys who only swim at school and swim three months out of the year.
“Everyone has a lot of team pride and put a lot into this season,” Boys and Girls Swimming Coach Patti Monzingo said. “Especially those three-month swimmers are getting out there and swimming, dropping huge amounts of time. I couldn’t believe what they were able to do. I was really special to watch.”
Sophomore Zachary Geller set new school and SPC records in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 47.38, and junior JJ Arbuckle achieved first place and set records in both the 200 IM (1:55.35) and the 100 Breaststroke.
“They’re just so supportive of each other, and the team camaraderie is just amazing,” Monzingo said. “I mean, I would give up the SPC title just to have that team camaraderie.”
The boys’ team scored 218 points at the SPC Championship, leading the competition, with Cistercian scoring 97 points and Houston Christian 58 points, reflecting the team’s work this season.
“I saw every single kid come out and work their butts off this season,” Monzingo said.
