On Feb. 8-10, winter athletes will be competing in the Southwest Preparatory Conference championships in Houston, Texas. The games will take place at various schools in the Houston area including Episcopal High School, Awty International School, St. Johns School and Houston Christian High School.
Boys Basketball
The varsity boys basketball team finished the regular season with a 27-3 record. Recording a 5-1 record versus conference opponents in counter season, they earned the fourth seed for the SPC Championship tournament.
The first round of the tournament will feature the four-seed Greenhill versus five-seed Houston Christian High School on Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.
“We’re locked in and we’re coming ready to play,” junior captain Dillon Watt said. “They doubted us, but we’re here to prove everyone wrong.”
Girls Basketball
After finishing first in the north zone in SPC with a 4-0 conference record, the girls varsity basketball team has their eyes set on a SPC title run.
As the three-seed in the SPC Championships, the girls varsity team will take on six-seed St. John’s School on Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.
Led by senior captain Sibelle Zambie and junior Vivian Franklin, the team said they have high hopes for the tournament after finishing third in the SPC tournament last year.
“To win SPC is definitely the goal,” Franklin said. “We’re working on what we need to do to prepare, and we’ll be ready come game time.”
Boys Soccer
The boys varsity soccer team finished third in the north zone. As the six-seed, Greenhill will play three-seed Awty International School on Feb. 8 at 5 p.m.
Throughout the season, the team has encountered injury troubles. After losing their starting center back senior Zander Kennedy for the rest of the season due to a knee injury, junior captain Noah Piper had to change positions from goalkeeper to center back to fill that void, with junior Aaron Stein stepping up as starting goalkeeper.
“I definitely had to adapt, but it was a sacrifice I was willing to make to help the team,” Piper said.
Additionally, the team is without junior center back Juan Orozco who suffered a torn ACL during football season. Sophomore Dhilan Lele, senior Adam Kesselman and sophomore Remi Joseph have also experienced injury setbacks throughout the year.
“We stayed unified as a team and approached each game with the same mentality of playing to the best of our ability,” junior captain Liam Fagelman said. “We didn’t make excuses for ourselves, and we stayed disciplined in our gameplan.”
Coming off a 7-1 win at Oakridge School in the last game of counter season, the team looks to carry the momentum into the SPC Championships.
“The SPC tournament is always fun for us because we are able to spend time with each other and combine everything that we’ve worked for throughout the season,” Fagelman said. “We’re looking forward to competing at the highest level and winning another championship.”
Girls Soccer
The girls varsity soccer team recorded four wins and 1 loss during counter season, earning them the five seed. They will play four-seed St. Stephens Episcopal School on Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.
Senior captain Devin Davis suffered a season-ending ACL tear in December 2023, leading to younger players to be called on.
Freshmen Alex Han, Sadie Werner and Raelyn Young, who became regular starters in their first season of varsity soccer, stepped up and were the leading scorers during counter season.
Overall, there is plenty of excitement going into the tournament, as the team is coming off a 7-0 in their last counter game versus Oakridge.
“This is the strongest team we have had in a long time, so we are very optimistic about how we much up against the competition,” senior captain Zoya Iyer said.
