The Crossman Dining Hall was remodeled and opened on Sept. 2. The changes included a redesigned layout and new rules for students and faculty to follow.
Instead of entering through West Dining like in previous years, students should now line up at the southeast doors closest to the Bernard L. Fulton Upper School. Upon entering the cafeteria, everyone now moves from right to left, starting with the hot lines and crossroads section.
“It was a little chaotic today because no one was really sure where to go, but I can see it getting more practical and efficient in the future,” junior Alex Han said.
The interior design of the cafeteria also changed. Instead of the large, brick oven previously behind the hot line, there is a direct view into the kitchen. The “hot line” and Crossroads also installed new counters with silverware dispensers built into them.
“I really like the look of the renovations,” Han said. “I feel like it makes the cafeteria and the school look more sleek and modern.”
The drink station is now located on the far left of the dining hall. It features a milk dispensor, rather than cartons.
“I enjoyed all of the new drink options that we had,” sophomore Ethan Sadka said. “The whole drink station felt bigger and more open and it’s so interesting how the milk comes out of a machine now.”
Another change to the cafeteria is the dish return window, featuring a conveyor belt. Silverware is placed in new chutes in front of the belt and students and faculty no longer have to scrape food or trash off their plates before placing them on the belt.
According to junior Nikita Bhasin, the cafeteria changes will take time to get used to as everyone is not familiar with the new layout.
“The line to put my plate away got really backed up and it looped basically to the entrance,” Bhasin said. “The Sage workers were very nice though and came around with bins to pick up dishes and get the line going again.”
