The boys varsity soccer team competed in the St. Thomas tournament in Houston, TX from Dec. 5-7.
Last year, the team competed in the same tournament and managed to win two out of three games.
This year, the team features a mix of underclassmen and seven senior players.
“The underclassmen are really impactful to the team because of their technical ability,” senior Liam Fagelman said. “We have a group of leaders as well as younger players that are able to fill their roles and do their job.”
The team played three games against St. Thomas High School, Antonian College Preparatory High School and The Woodlands Christian Academy.
They drew versus St. Thomas 4-4, won against Antonian 4-0 and beat Woodlands Christan 5-0, keeping their season record undefeated so far.
“We played some of the best teams we will play all season,” senior Juan Orozco said.
Fagelman scored nine goals across the three games, scoring a hat trick each game.
“Liam is a great role model and captain for everyone on the team,” Orozco said. “He pushes the team as a whole to be better.”
Fagelman mentioned that younger players who do not normally play in the games had to step up this past weekend.
“Not only did we outwork and outhustle the other teams, but we had fun, played with quality and made a positive impact,” Fagelman said.
Senior Will Johnson, who played in the Houston tournament this year for the third time in his varsity soccer career, emphasized the trip’s positive impact on the team.
“It is always a great experience for the team to bond and get ready for counter season,” Johnson said.
Fagelman says off the field, the team participated in team bonding activities such as karaoke and a cold plunge in the hotel’s pool.
“I thought [the cold plunge] was pretty significant because no one wanted to get in, but everyone put their discomfort aside and overcame the challenge of the freezing water together,” Fagelman said.
Fagelman emphasized that this activity stood as a testament to what the team is capable of if they are all committed and willing to do things that are ultimately worth it in the long run.
“I am looking forward to seeing our team compete at the highest level and step up to any challenge like we did this past weekend,” Fagelman said.
