The boys’ and girls’ swim team has enjoyed a spotless record at home this year, winning every meet that took place, and recently participated in the Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) tournament.  They also have not lost a dual meet.

According to junior Cassidy Beckwitt, this year was a large improvement from last year for the swim team

“I think that the season has gone really well so far,” she said. “People are putting a lot more effort in practice than I have seen before, and it is really paying off in the meets. I love watching my teammates who I know have worked really hard to improve, get their best times, and win races. I think that we have a better team now than we ever have, and it is showing with our times and abilities to win meets and be successful over all.”

Senior co-captain Will Acton said that he has very much enjoyed his time spent on the swim team.

“Swimming is the perfect sport for me because I love competing against myself and against others,” he said.

This season has also seen several school records shattered.

Sophomore Claire Brandt improved on and broke some records as well, However, she narrowly missed the school record for the 100-yard backstroke.

At the Greenhill Invitational, the mixed relay team, which consists of senior Jack Beckwitt, Cassidy, Claire, and junior Hunter Hayden broke yet another record.

Hunter Hayden broke the 100-yard freestyle record and was the first boy to break the 50 second barrier.

The boys have already broken the record in the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard free relay.

Next year, the team will lose some of its most valuable swimmers when the seniors graduate, but the rest of the team has been performing well.

“I would like to add a few more divers to the two we have this year,” said Jim Montgomery, Varsity Swimming Head Coach. “With the eighth graders we have coming up, I would like the girls to give The Hockaday School a run for their money on winning the first SPC Championship in swimming.”

In anticipation of the incoming high schoolers and strong team returning, the current swimmers said the team can compensate for lost members.
